There are many roads within McKinley County, but not all of them are maintained by the County, some are maintained by the State of New Mexico, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Subdivisions or are Private. McKinley County only maintains roads listed on the County Road Inventory. A copy of the Road Inventory may be viewed and printed on the County’s website or you may call the Road Department at 505-722-2303 with questions.Roads

The Road Department Maintenance Supervisor will go out and inspect the property and inform the resident of the recommended culvert size as size varies. It is the responsibility of the resident to purchase the culvert and they may either have installed themselves or have the County install it a cost which will be determined at payment through the County Manager’s Office. Upon payment, the County Manager’s Office will request the Road Department to order the culvert for the resident.Roads

People are encouraged to submit these requests to their Commissioners at the County Manager’s office as funds are requested and allocated through the State of New Mexico or Navajo Nation for certain County roads during the County Commission Road Priority Meeting that is scheduled at the beginning of each calendar year.Roads

Animal Control is responsible for the removal of smaller animals and may be reached at 505-726-1453. The Livestock Inspector is responsible for the removal of large animals and can be reached through Metro Dispatch at 505-722-2002. The Road Department will assist with the removal of large dead animals if it is a safety issue or if the Livestock inspector is not available.Roads

Roads will be bladed after moisture has had time to soak in the ground. Should roads be bladed immediately after moisture has had a chance to soak in, it will cause large ruts from the weight of the equipment and damage the surface of the road.Roads
