County Commissioner, District I

Carol Bowman-Muskett is a Democrat that was elected to the District 1 seat on the McKinley County Board of Commissioners in November of 2010. The Commissioner took office in January of 2011 representing the largest of the three districts in McKinley County.

A fourth generation New Mexican and a member of the Navajo Tribe, Commissioner Bowman-Muskett grew up in Gallup in the Mexican Springs area of McKinley County.  She is an alumni of Gallup High School and attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and the University of New Mexico Gallup Campus.  She and her husband, Vincent, live in Mexican Springs, and have two children and two grand children.

Commissioner Bowman-Muskett comes from a long-line of politicians. Starting with her grandfather who was a Board member of the Red Lake Chapter for many years improving the small community. Her father Richard Bowman was McKinley County Commissioner for 2 consecutive terms in the early 80’s and was the County Assessor during the 90’s and is currently serving McKinley County Treasurer.

Commissioner Bowman-Muskett’s top priorities are to open up the lines of communication and start a good working relationship between the Navajo Tribe, McKinley County, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs to achieve better intergovernmental coordination and comprehensive planning to support local communities, which are faced with limited resources.

Commissioner Bowman-Muskett brings to this position, a personal understanding of the area and experience within County Government.  She has served 28 years of service with the McKinley County Managers office as a Grant Administrator and in October of 2010, retired.
